Hybrids shine at Nicaragua Cup of Excellence
This year’s Cup of Excellence Nicaragua was notable not just for the excellent-quality coffees awarded by the jury, but for the impressive performance of hybrid varieties in the competition. F1 hybrids—which are created through breeding programs to be high in quality and yield, and resistant to pests and diseases—represented four of the top 11 coffees in the competition. The highest-placing F1 variety was a Centroamericano coffee from farmer Gonzalo Adán Castillo Moreno, which placed second.
