If you are able to determine the GxE interaction, you can do all sorts of interesting an important things. You can determine the optimal varieties for a given environment. You can determine the optimal variety for a future environment. You can determine which varieties might not be the exact most optimal across all environments, but that might be the best average overall – something we often need to do in coffee because there just isn’t the infrastructure out there to produce lots of cool new niche varieties. Breeders can use GxE data to breed specifically for certain environments, not just throw lots of options at the wall and see what sticks. - Hanna Neuschwander
