In its new feature article “Going to Extremes: Examining the Future of Specialty Coffee,” Imbibe Magazine looks at the actions taken by many industry players to foster the sustainable production of coffee in the face of pressing challenges, chief among them the effects of climate change. The article highlights the formation of World Coffee Research and our efforts to bring the industry together to support coffee-focused agricultural research that helps coffee farmers find success in this challenging landscape.

Hybrids shine at Nicaragua Cup of Excellence
This year’s Cup of Excellence Nicaragua was notable not just for the excellent-quality coffees awarded by the jury, but for the impressive performance of F1 hybrid varieties in the competition. The highest-placing F1 hybrid was Centroamericano, a coffee from farmer Gonzalo Adán Castillo Moreno, which placed second. A new Barista Magazine article delves further into the recent competition and the success of the F1 hybrids, which are a core component of WCR’s coffee breeding strategy.
Program Updates
Understanding Farmer’s Relationship with New Plants
In 2017, World Coffee Research and our partner Anacafe distributed seedlings of the new F1 hybrid Centroamericano to 179 farmers in San Pedro Yepocapa, Guatemala, to help the smallholder farmers in the area continue to recover from the effects of coffee leaf rust. A socioeconomic study of the farmers participating in the project seeks to understand the main obstacles they face in producing and selling high-quality coffee.
