Hybrids shine at Nicaragua Cup of Excellence
This year’s Cup of Excellence Nicaragua was notable not just for the excellent-quality coffees awarded by the jury, but for the impressive performance of F1 hybrid varieties in the competition. The highest-placing F1 hybrid was Centroamericano, a coffee from farmer Gonzalo Adán Castillo Moreno, which placed second. A new Barista Magazine article delves further into the recent competition and the success of the F1 hybrids, which are a core component of WCR’s coffee breeding strategy.

Understanding Farmer’s Relationship with New Plants
In 2017, World Coffee Research and our partner Anacafe distributed seedlings of the new F1 hybrid Centroamericano to 179 farmers in San Pedro Yepocapa, Guatemala, to help the smallholder farmers in the area continue to recover from the effects of coffee leaf rust. A socioeconomic study of the farmers participating in the project seeks to understand the main obstacles they face in producing and selling high-quality coffee.

EFICO Group to support World Coffee Research
The EFICO Group has announced a US$90,000 contribution to World Coffee Research.
This commitment supports the industry-backed, nonprofit R&D organization to bring improved varieties and climate-smart agronomy approaches to farmers via a global network of farmer field trials—called the Global Coffee Monitoring Program—to test which combinations of improved varieties and climate-smart farming practices deliver the most profit to the farmer.
