Vietnam

Vietnam is the world’s largest producer of robusta coffee, accounting for over 40% of global robusta output. Vietnam has an estimated 640,000 farms1, mostly concentrated in the Western Highlands region. Coffee is a major economic driver, generating over $5 billion in export revenue in the 2023–2024 crop year2 and making up over 12% of Vietnam’s agricultural GDP.1 According to Vietnam’s General Statistics Office (GSO), coffee cultivation area has expanded consistently in Vietnam since 2013.3 While robusta dominates, the government is actively investing in specialty arabica production.3 The government supports coffee through research, extension, and replanting programs, with recent emphasis on improving quality, sustainability, and climate resilience. The Western Highland Agriculture and Forest Science Institute (WASI) is Vietnam’s predominant coffee research institution.
